The project was born from the need both to know and to describe the preferences in the use of materials in stone by the prehistoric man, within the wide ranges of materials, siliceous, as we approach the possible areas of supply of such items, less, well, if this mining primitive was more or less costly, and if he was more or less planned.

  • For these purposes, the Institute has been defining the model of the construction and filing of a reference collection of rock types on the base that have been used during prehistory, especially targeted towards the cantabrian region, although without forgetting the major types that are peculiar from other continental regions.
  • The collection has been raised as a tool of work and research support, samples, and references to increase as the investigations move forward and provide new materials. It is a reference collection which is conceived in permanent construction.
  • It is intended that in the Litoteca are collected in detail the varieties lithological used during prehistory, reflecting in detail in its documentation the intrinsic qualities of the samples. In addition, there is a mapping that represents the rocky outcrops of the potential areas of origin of the useful lithic prehistoric.
