The International Institute for Prehistoric Research of Cantabria (IIIPC) is a university institute of research of a mixed nature, of shared ownership by the Government of Cantabria, University of Cantabria and Santander Universities. It is situated in the premises of the campus of the University of Cantabria in Santander. IIIPc is dedicated to the research in Prehistory and is committed to the training of researchers, the dissemination of the Prehistory and the conservation of archaeological heritage. It currently hosts two dozens of senior researchers and to so many other researchers in training, technical support of research, outreach workers and management staff and administration. Also notable is its international dimension, with the development of agreements for regular collaboration for their research projects, training, or disclosure.
Our main thematic areas are the study of paleolithic art, the technologies prehistoric forms of life in the times of glaciers, the origin of the societies producing, the reconstruction of the environmental conditions of the past or control of the risks to the archaeological heritage.

History of the institution
The International Institute for Prehistoric Research of Cantabria -(CANTABRIAN)- is a University Institute of Research of mixed character, created by Decree 38/2004 of 29 April (BOC may 10, 2004), and sponsored by the University of Cantabriathe Government of Cantabria and Santander Universities through the Collaboration Agreement agreed upon by the parties on the date of may 14, 2003.
In he established the basic criteria, we defined the bases of the functioning and determined the organizational structure, personal contributions and materials of the parts. Subsequently, the convention has been ratified by all the parties with the object of maintaining the initial level of support and regular contributions, in December 2007, June 2011, December 2012 and December 2014.
In June 2015 he signed a new collaboration Agreement to support the consolidation of the Institute. This new agreement has been ratified in December of 2021.
The CANTABRIAN is led currently by Pablo Arias Cabal in 2026, and deputy director Igor Gutiérrez Zugasti
