Archaeological research of the field in the Cave of Axlor. Campaign 2025.
The study of the International institute for Prehistoric Research of Cantabria at the site of Axlor (Dima, Bizkaia) continues this year with the FOURTEENTH campaign of excavations.
The sequence palaeolithic of Axlor contains occupations neanderthals of between 100,000 and 45,000 years, in one of the prehistoric sites best-preserved to this period in western Europe.
The work of this campaign focus on the occupations of 70,000 years ago and in the last neanderthals. The initial results show the development of an elaborate system of mobility on the part of the groups neanderthals from more than 70,000 years ago. In this system combine the planning of seasonal activities for the hunting herds of migration and the displacement of these human groups in areas of several thousand square kilometres. The field work has counted with the support of the city of Dima and with the participation of the technical staff of the CANTABRIAN and students of master's degree and a degree from the universities of Cantabria, Alicante, Autónoma de Barcelona, universidad Complutense de Madrid, Salamanca, Valladolid, Córdoba, and Santiago de Compostela.
The research in Axlor is part of the projects NEANDERTALHD-History neanderthal, the Plan of Generation of Knowledge of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and AXLOR XXI, financed by the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, directed by J. González-Urquijo and Talía Lazuen.
