Archaeological investigations at the Archaeological Complex of The Garma. Campaign 2025.

The archaeological work of the International institute for Prehistoric Research of Cantabria in the Archaeological site of la Garma is currently focusing on the documentation of various structures, paleolithic in the Gallery Below. Among them, the cabin magdalenian period of the old lobby of the cave, dating back to around 15,000.C., one of the houses the best preserved of the european Paleolithic, in the that have recovered more than 4,000 objects. Simultaneously, during the month of August, we are developing excavations in three sectors of the mount of Garma: the entrance of La Garma A, where they study occupations dated to around 38,000 to.C., corresponding to the transition from neanderthals to anatomically modern humans; the castro to the Top of The Garma, where they continue to work in a fortress settlement of the s. VII.C., inhabited by the direct ancestors of the cantabri; and the Gallery Basement, where it expects to complete the study of a unique set of burials of the period visigothic, dating from around 700 d.C., in which are preserved many weapons, personal ornaments, and other remains relevant, as fabric or seeds.
The project, led by professor of prehistory of the UC Pablo Arias and the director of the MUPAC Roberto Ontañón, has been funded this year through a grant from the department of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Government of Cantabria and the projects RitDomS, the State Plan of I+D+i, and ArqueoTIC (strategic projects aimed at the green transition and digital transition). The works include the participation of several researchers from UC and other Spanish and foreign, and of a group of graduates and students from the Universities of Cantabria, Oviedo, Valladolid, Burgos and Barcelona.
